Complete Book of Harmony, Theory & Voicing
This is a very comprehensive text that combines theory, harmony and voicing material with emphasis placed on voice leading. Although this book’s primary focus is on four-note chord voicings on the middle strings of the guitar, much of the knowledge conveyed here can be appreciated and used by all jazz musicians, not only guitarists. Topics covered include: Tensions, Voice Leading Chord Scales, Enharmonic Chordal Substitutions, Fourth Voicings, Chromatic Guide Lines, Triad Over Bass Voicings, and much more! The best part of this book, however, is the unique and practical way the author takes modern harmonic concepts and shows you how to apply them in real music situations! Harmony For Class Teaching Book 1
Composer, conductor and educator Anthony Milner taught music theory at Morley College in London (Gustav Holst and Sir Michael Tippett have been Directors of Music there, among others), followed by positions at London University, King’s College London, Goldsmith’s College and the Royal College of Music. His music Voice has been described as ‘orderly but impassioned’ which can also be said of his pedagogy. This short – 54 pages – book studies music of the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, from Bach to Beethoven, as an easy starting point for understanding of theory and harmony. Milner believed that the best method of teaching harmony was one-on-one at the Keyboard, but devised this book for an academic year’s class work as the next best option. The teaching is unassailable, though it is Milner’s own Voice that seasons the text with sound advice and gives the book is personable flavour. Of eccentrically personal music notation, he says, ‘Writing [music] is a means of communication, not of character portrayal. Write clearly.’ Of the narrowness of the material covered, ‘Let the knowledge of one small part of music be…a gateway to the love and understanding of the rest.’ Milner is a practical, characterful colleague in the teaching of music theory.

This is a book that can be used by instrumental and vocal teachers who want their students to know some of the essentials of harmony, but who haven’t the time to teach it as a separate subject. Thus, a piano teacher, for example, can teach harmony in conjunction with the regular piano lesson. At the end of Book II, we have employed harmony in an accompaniment sense rather than in the traditional four-part harmony way. Transposition has been treated both melodically and harmonically.

The Heart Of Vocal Harmony – Emotional Expression In Group Singing
Deke Sharona’s choral reference guide with a difference. While most choirs spend their rehearsal time focusing on notes, rhythms and precision, few discuss a song’s meaning and feeling, even though those elements are precisely what draws people to the music in the first place. Thousands of books have been written about choral technique, teaching people how to sing technically well. What sets The Heart Of Vocal Harmony apart is its focus on honest unified expression and the process of delivering an emotionally compelling performance. It delves into an underdeveloped Vocal topic – the heart of the music and the process involved with expressing it. The Heart Of Vocal Harmony is not just for a cappella groups – it is also for Vocal harmony groups, ensembles, and choirs at all levels, with or without instruments. In addition to the process, the book features discussions with some of the biggest luminaries in Vocal harmony: composers, arrangers, directors, singers, and groups – including Eric Whitacre, Pentatonix, the Manhattan Transfer, and more.

The Murphy Method: Harmony Singing Made Easy (DVD)
Teaches you to sing harmony by ear. Murphy and friends Bill Evans, Janet Beazley, and Chris Stuart join together to sing some beautiful trios and quartets. First you hear the three (or four) voices blending together, then you hear each harmony part sung separately. You learn your part by singing along with us. We sing several songs in three different keys so no matter what your vocal range you can try your hand at singing the lead part. Sometimes the men (Bill, Chris) take the lead; sometimes the women (Murphy, Janet) take the lead. With three keys to choose from, you can also find a harmony part to suit your voice.Along the way we offer some helpful hints such as “What key do I sing in?” “How do I find my harmony part?” and “How can I get a good blend?” At the very end Murphy and Bill break out their banjos for a rousing quartet version of “Over in the Gloryland.” Very entertaining! If you’ve been wondering how to sing harmony, we’ve made it as easy as possible. Or as we say in Virginia, “It’s as easy as pie.” Read even more details on our blog. Will the Circle Be Unbroken, Bury Me Beneath the Willow, All the Good Times Are Past and Gone, Don’t This Road Look Rough and Rocky, Amazing Grace, Over in the Gloryland.

Treatise On Harmony by Jean-Philippe Rameau
One of the most important books in the history of Western music. Written while Rameau was still a relatively obscure organist and music master at Clermont-Ferrand, the book received but one printing during Rameau’s life, in 1722, shortly before he settled in Paris. The Traité was immediately recognized as a profound advance in musical theory, however, and it established Rameau’s reputation as a theorist. His book was the first to codify those principles of tonality that were to dominate the music of the West for almost two centuries. Even today the theories of Rameau remain the basis for the study of harmony. Rameau’s Traité de l’harmonie is divided into four books, the first of which presents the mathematical basis from which Rameau sought to derive his theories. Book Two may be considered the most important section of the Traité; in it Rameau generates his entire harmonic system from fundamental principles, explaining intervals, chords, and modes  everything, in fact, essential to musical composition in tonal style. Working from the principles developed in Books One and Two, Book Three treats the practical rules of composition, including such topics as harmonic modulation and chord progressions. Book Four concerns the practical art of accompaniment on harpsichord or organ, including the realization of a figured bass. Corrections added by Rameau in a supplement are included in the text, and all the musical examples have been reset in modern musical notation. In addition, two pages from a unique copy of the first issue of the first edition are given in facsimile. The translator’s introduction discusses the history of the work, Rameau’s mathematics, and his place in the history of music theory.

William Lovelock: First Year Harmony Complete
This is the first of three books dealing with harmonic resource, covering all that is required in the way of chords and their decoration. rom the FOREWORD. In writing this book my aim has been not only to show the student how to manage and use the various possibilities, but also when to introduce them  a point which is obviously of prime importance. One so often encounters students who can talk glibly about the “treatment” of all kinds of chords, but who seem not to have the slightest idea of when to use them, or how to know when their use is implied in a given part. While the harmonisation of a melody or a bass is to a great extent dependent on the musical sensibility of the student, it has to be realised that certain melodic progressions imply, normally, certain definite harmonies, and these implications I have tried to make clear. Elementary work, at least, is largely compounded of commonplaces, and my object has been as far as possible to show how the underlying commonplace may be “spotted.” An appendix on Figured Bass, for the benefit of those who use it in teaching, is published separately. It provides instruction and exercises on each chapter. The chapters and material have been arranged not only to provide a good grounding, but also to cover what is generally needed in the more elementary Harmony examinations, such as the paper work of the A.T.C.L., A.R.C.M., and L.R.A.M., and the whole book is based on my own practical experience in the teaching of Harmony. An attempt has also been made to show how exercises can be made reasonably interesting and flowing, by the early introduction of the unessential, and in particular Suspensions, which are often left to a later stage on account of their supposed difficulty. Actually they are easy enough to manage if dealt with on the lines indicated. The treatment of certain matters has been deliberately restricted and limited for the sake of clarity and simplicity; Modulation, for example, has been dealt with only in an elementary manner. The student is recommended to follow this book by my “Hints for Paper Work Candidates” (Hammond & Co. which will serve for general revision. Ample supplementary exercises are to be found in my “108 Exercises in Harmonisation”, â€â€W. Lovelock.

Yvonne Desportes: Precise Harmonic Analysis
This book intends to accompany and aid harmony and analysis classes at conservatoires and other musical institutions. Covering a wide range of aspects, Yvonne Desportes”s book succeeds in its intentions. As a student of Paul Dukas, Desportes (1907-1993) won the Premier Grand Prix de Rome for harmony in 1932. She then went on to teach at the Paris Conservatoire, compose over 300 works, and publish many music textbooks. Compiled in 1948, Precise Harmonic Analysis addresses intervals, modulations, chords, suspensions, appoggiaturas and échappées, among many other aspects. This book is essential to accompany all intermediate to advanced music studies.
