Arranged by Michael Dansicker. Vocal Collection. Size 9×12 inches. 192 pages. Published by Hal Leonard.
Most large audition calls for musical theatre, both professionally and in larger school situations, specify that those auditioning bring in a 16 bar excerpt. The professionals in musical theatre often complain that singers don’t know how to construct an appropriate 16 bar audition, either in choosing a song or in editing an excerpt. With this new series, that problem is solved forever! Editor Michael Dansicker, a composer/producer/music director, is a seasoned musical theatre veteran, with 100 Broadway credits. He brings his expertise and broad knowledge of the literature to this series. Each excerpt has been given a thoughtful, graceful and effective form. No more illegible scribblings for the poor audition accompanist! An enormous variety of literature is represented, from old standards to movie songs to the latest Broadway and Off-Broadway material. With 100 songs per volume, any singing actor, whatever his or her talents and strong suits, will have many choices. In the preface, the editor gives valuable pointers on the nature of a good audition and some factors in choosing songs. Mass in G Minor for Soli (S.A.T.B.) and Double Chorus (Curwen Edition)
The Mass in G minor of 1922 has been described as the vocal equivalent of the great Tallis Fantasia — double choir (double string orchestra), four soloists (string quartet) — and the methods of the Elizabeth fantasy are employed, for instance the use of a motif, always slightly varied, in the different voice parts, thereby giving a unity to the whole colloquy. Strangely, though its mastery is indisputable and its authorship undeniable, the Mass is in some respects the most anonymous of Vaughan Williams’s works. This is as it should be. He wrote it for liturgical use, the music being subservient to religious ceremony. There is none of the elaborate augmentation of the great Masses of Bach, Beethoven and Berlioz, nor indeed is there the intellectual power of Byrd. Most of Vaughan Williams’s religious music is of an emotional power which would have been out of place in a setting of the Ordinary. It should not be thought, however, that there is anything austere about this Mass. Its richness is a by-product of the glowing counterpoint as well as being a fundamental of Vaughan Williams’s approach to such a task. The influences of Debussy, and therefore of Mussorgsky, can still be discerned in the Mass, for there is something of Pelléas et Mélisande there. The anonymous bon mot about ‘L’Après-Midi d’un Vaughan’ was perceptive as well as witty. The Mass is also indicative of the subtle and deep change which had been wrought by his experiences since 1914 in Vaughan Williams’s nationalism. Like the Tallis Fantasia, the Mass was conceived in terms of the acoustics of a cathedral or church and, unlike the Fantasia, it does not transplant well to a concert-hall. Its dedicatees, Holst and his Whitsuntide Singers, performed it whenever possible in church or cathedral, Thaxted, Chichester, and once at Canterbury whence Holst wrote to Adeline Vaughan Williams that he had discovered that it might have been ‘written for this cathedral’.

Sing, Choirs!: Anthems, Psalms And Hymns For Choirs (SATB/Organ)
ing, Choirs! is a library in miniature. It contains many of the Christian church’s popular traditional anthems, including at least one example that will be suitable for each of the major services of the year. A number of Anglican chants (Psalms, Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis) are included, set out in a way that should enable those who are unfamiliar with the style to perform them easily. The selection of movements from the Mass can be used to enrich the music of the liturgy in services. Many of the works in Sing, Choirs! are presented in their original form, such as Bruckner’s Locus Iste and Mozart’s Laudate Dominum. Others are arrangements, adaptations or longer pieces, abridged to bring them into the scope of a useable anthem, including choral arrangements of Handel’s Largo, the Ave Marias by Schubert and by Bach and Gounod, and Franck’s Panis Angelicus amongst many others. This collection has practicability as a priority. The Organ parts can be played on either the Piano or the Keyboard. Much of the music in Sing, Choirs! will be suitable for special occasions, making this an indispensable volume for choirs singing at weekly church services, weddings, funerals and in the concert hall.

The Complete Cantatas (Study Scores)
Composed by Johann Sebastian Bach (1685 – 1750). No group of works in Johann Sebastian Bachs output is as wide-ranging as the cantatas. This is hardly surprising considering that for over five years Bach was required to compose a work, or at least re-work an existing one, for every Sunday and festival of the church year, as well as for numerous secular occasions such as council inaugurations, school and university celebrations and royal birthdays.Unfortunately, not all cantatas have survived. However, over 200 sacred and secular works exist and form a corpus of works suitable for all possible occasions. This rich musical heritage is still as relevant today as it was then. BÃ… renreiterÃâ€s unique edition, which encompasses more than 11,000 pages, includes all cantatas together with the motets, chorales and sacred songs in the Urtext of the New Bach Edition. As a special extra, the recently rediscovered aria Alles mit Gott und nichts ohn ihn is also included. Only available here is an additional volume with an introduction (German/English) by Christoph Wolff and an index.

The New Novello Book Of Short & Easy Anthems For Mixed-Voice Choirs
A useful new resource for choirs, the New Novello Book Of Short & Easy Anthems For Mixed-Voice Choirs is perfect for groups of all sizes and abilities. The pieces in this exciting collection have been carefully chosen to offer a selection of interesting contemporary works alongside older and more well-known anthems. It is recognised that many choirs have limited rehearsal time and, frequently, limited vocal resources. This collection aims to provide works that are easily and quickly learnable, with few splits in voice parts. In addition, many of the pieces in the New Novello Book Of Short & Easy Anthems For Mixed-Voice Choirs can be adapted to work as unison settings with accompaniment, or in other flexible forms. The New Novello Book Of Short & Easy Anthems For Mixed-Voice Choirs is arranged for SATB Choir, with Organ accompaniment. In the January 2015 edition of the Journal of the Association of Anglican Musicians, Jason Overall writes that “[t]he wealth of new music of modest technical difficulty makes this an interesting and useful collection for nearly every choir.” In the September 2015 issue of the Organists’ Review, Michael Bell calls this a “welcome and stimulating publication”, suggesting that it provides a counter to claims that “choir repertoires include little seriously modern music.”
